Sorry about that.]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the attractions that led Debbie and me to retire in the Texas Hill Country is the wide variety of live music that we have continuous access to. Of course, alert Gazette readers know that we&#8217;re always on the lookout for dancing opportunities, but we&#8217;re also happy &#8212; or at least willing &#8212; to sit and listen in a concert setting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last weekend, we experienced a bit of musical whiplash as we attended two shows that featured music that landed squarely at the opposite ends of the musical spectrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Saturday night, we drove about twenty miles to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spicewoodvineyards.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spicewood Vineyards<\/a> where the <a href=\"https:\/\/spicewoodarts.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spicewood Arts Society<\/a>&#8216;s penultimate concert of its 2024-2025 season featured a performance by <strong>Patricia Vonne<\/strong> (with <strong>David Perales<\/strong>) and another by <strong>Del Castillo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the following afternoon, we listened to the reconstituted version of the folk\/pop legends, the <strong>Kingston Trio<\/strong>. This sold-out concert was a project of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hsbenrichment.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Horseshoe Bay Cultural Enrichment Society<\/a>, and our drive to the venue was less than five miles, always a plus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on for my take on each of these performances&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a title=\"Visit her website\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patriciavonne.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patricia Vonne<\/a> (with David Perales) &#8212; Singer, Songwriter, Actress, Filmmaker, Condessa of Castanets<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-twentytwentyone-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/vonne1.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Patricia Vonne in concert; Spicewood, TX, April 2025\" class=\"wp-image-14937\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/vonne1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/vonne1-300x257.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Reading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0735466\/bio\/?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vonne&#8217;s bio on IMDB.com<\/a> is like drinking from a firehose, a seemingly endless list of awards and achievements, almost none of which relate to her musical skills. (I suppose that&#8217;s understandable given that IMDB is, well, a movie-centric website). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vonne (n\u00e9e Rodriguez) is a native of San Antonio, spending eleven years in New York City before returning to Texas around 2001. She&#8217;s the sister of Austin-based filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Rodriguez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robert Rodriguez<\/a> (<em>Spy Kids<\/em>, <em>Sin City<\/em>, <em>Desperado<\/em>, <em>From Dusk to Dawn<\/em>, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accompanying Vonne was the accomplished <em>violinista<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/album\/david-perales-mw0001176917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Perales<\/a>. At one point, Vonne exchanged her guitar for castanets, and invited Rick del Castillo to join her and Perales on the stage. In any event, they were too fast for my phone&#8217;s camera. Fortunately, someone else in the audience that night was better equipped. The following video showcases her performance of <em>Traeme Paz<\/em> (&#8220;Bring Me Peace&#8221;). This song was featured in Robert Rodriguez&#8217;s movie, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Once_Upon_a_Time_in_Mexico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Once Upon a Time in Mexico<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u201cTraeme Paz\u201d by Patricia Vonne\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3jF3oD3hjCo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Video by Dawn Starke\u00a9<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure how best to characterize Vonne&#8217;s musical style, but perhaps something like Tex-Mex roots rock wouldn&#8217;t be too far off the mark. That eminent and well-known music critic, ChatGPT, also suggests that she&#8217;s a &#8220;spicier Linda Ronstadt.&#8221; Okey-doke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of the specific genre, Vonne is theatrical, entertaining, and talented, and her performance was very well received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Del Castillo &#8212; <em>Guitarristas trascendentes<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We first encountered <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Del_Castillo_(band)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Del Castillo<\/a> in Fredericksburg (TX) in the summer of 2012; I documented that experience <a href=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/2012\/06\/30\/120630-delcastillo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>. Since then, we&#8217;ve caught their performances in various venues and in various combinations of players, including as a trio. A couple of the members have changed over the years, but the founding brothers, Rick and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_del_Castillo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark<\/a> del Castillo remain the glue that keeps the music together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their lead singer, Danny Ortiz, was a member of the Grammy-winning (<a title=\"Grammy.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/artists\/jimmy-gonzalez-y-el-grupo-mazz\/14611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Best Tejano Album<\/a>, 2004) group, Jimmy Gonzalez Y El Grupo Mazz. Ortiz was a childhood friend of the del Castillos and he joined the group following the departure of longtime lead vocalist Alex Ruiz. Ruiz was a dynamic performer (you can hear him and the rest of Del Castillo on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=G5j4tIlXbMw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Listen on YouTube\">this version<\/a> of <em><a title=\"More about this famous ballad via Wikipedia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malague\u00f1a_Salerosa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Listen on YouTube\">Malague\u00f1a Salerosa<\/a><\/em> that was featured in Quentin Tarantino&#8217;s gentle ode to mayhem and bloodbaths, <em>Kill Bill Vol. 2<\/em>), and there has been absolutely no dropoff in energy and talent with Ortiz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-twentytwentyone-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/delcastillo.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Del Castillo performing in Spicewood, TX - April 5, 2025\" class=\"wp-image-14952\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/delcastillo.jpg 640w, https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/delcastillo-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Del Castillo&#8217;s music falls squarely in the broad category of guitar-driven Latin rock, but there&#8217;s much around the edges of that genre, including flamenco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think you&#8217;ve seen the best guitar players in the world, but you haven&#8217;t seen the del Castillo brothers in concert, then you might need to rethink. Here&#8217;s a short snippet that I recorded from their performance. I recommend watching this on YouTube to get a better look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rick &amp; Mark del Castillo - Guitar solos snippets\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/X0VOhtHczp4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The concert venue was small &#8212; perhaps 200 in attendance &#8212; and it made for an intimate experience. The only downside for us was that the sound levels were simply too high for such a small room. I know, I know: <em>if it&#8217;s too loud, you&#8217;re too old<\/em>. But I&#8217;d estimate that the average age of the audience was more than fifty years, so it wasn&#8217;t just us. Besides being loud (or because of the loudness), the vocals were sometimes muddy-sounding and hard to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite that irritation, it was a great evening of music and we&#8217;d jump at the chance to do it again. Plus, we had barbecue catered by Spicewood&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itsallgoodbbq.com\">It&#8217;s All Good BBQ<\/a>, and they lived up to their name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Kingston Trio: Stories and Music from Last Century<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Less than 24 hours later, we were sitting in a ballroom at the Horseshoe Bay Resort, along with another 200-strong audience of even older people than the previous night, awaiting the appearance of the newest incarnation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingstontrio.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Kingston Trio<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-twentytwentyone-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/kingstontrio.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: The Kingston Trio - 2025 edition\" class=\"wp-image-14958\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/kingstontrio.jpg 640w, https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/kingstontrio-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">l-r: Tim Gorelangton, Mike Marvin, Buddy Woodward <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I was five years old when the original trio emerged on the Californian folk music scene. At one point in their career, they were the biggest-selling musical group on the planet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original members of the trio were Dave Guard, Bob Shane, and Nick Reynolds. Their breakthrough hit was <em>Tom Dooley<\/em> in 1958, and their musical influence was far-reaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dave Guard left the Trio in 1961 and was replaced by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Stewart_(musician)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Stewart<\/a>, who remained with the group until it disbanded in 1967. The pop musician experts among you might recognize Stewart as the writer and performer of the 1979 hit, <em><a title=\"Listen to the song on YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B3KGpIoE5CY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gold<\/a><\/em>. (Stewart would later stop performing the song, saying that he only did for the money. D&#8217;oh. Or, dough.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Kingston Trio Tom Dooley Live 1958\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S3zdE8bliGI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Live performance from <em>The Milton Berle Show<\/em> in 1958<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to imagine, given the mellow stylings of their music, but they had <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Kingston_Trio#Initial_criticism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some fierce critics<\/a> in the &#8220;old establishment&#8221; of folk music. Interestingly, the Trio never claimed to be folk singers&#8230;that was the label that Capitol Records placed on them because they didn&#8217;t know how else to pigeonhole the Trio. OTOH, the Trio did take several traditional songs from the folk catalog and put their own spin on them, so it&#8217;s somewhat understandable that traditionalists would object&#8230;both out of righteous indignation, but also a bit of jealousy over their success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of how you classify their music, it was inarguably influential on a massive group of famous musicians to come, among them: Steve Martin, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Steven Stills and David Crosby, Jimmy Buffett, John Denver, and the groups Abba and the Bee Gees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So much for the history&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current lineup consists of multi-instrumentalists &#8212; all play banjos and Martin guitars; Woodward also plays the ukulele and the conga. Marvin had a special relationship with the original trio, in that he was  taken under Nick Reynolds&#8217;s wing as a teenager and practicallly grew up with the group, gaining an invaluable education in how the music business worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-twentytwentyone-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"605\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/kingstontrio2.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: The Kingston Trio (plus Jim Stanley on upright bass) in concert at Horseshoe Bay Resort (TX) - April, 2025\" class=\"wp-image-14960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/kingstontrio2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/kingstontrio2-300x284.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The bass play that accompanied the Trio is Jim Stanley, based in Tucson, AZ<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Our seats for the concert weren&#8217;t ideal for picture taking&#8230;there were no significant obstructions, but the angle was terrible. Sorry about that.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I confess that while the musicians were quite talented and their stories &#8212; oh so many stories &#8212; were, on the whole, interesting and often quite amusing, many of the songs were unfamiliar to Debbie and me. However, as I looked around the room during some of those songs, more people were singing along than not, and they were rapturous in their applause. What a difference ten years makes in one&#8217;s birthdate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s not to say the music was totally lost on us. We were happy to join with the throng on tunes like <em>Where Have All The Flowers Gone<\/em>, the aforementioned <em>Tom Dooley<\/em>, <em>Greenback Dollar<\/em>, and their arrangement of Woody Guthrie&#8217;s <em>This Land Is Your Land<\/em>.
