I wash my hands \u2014 figuratively speaking, of course \u2014 of the whole thing. Proceed at your own risk.]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>[Me: <\/em>\ud83e\udd71<em>]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"108\" height=\"15\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/divider.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14536\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was thinking about sunrises the other day, and specifically about how the exact time of sunrise is determined for our location in the Texas Hill Country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"return1\">We have 45 windows in our house and almost a third of them have automatic shades that can be programmed to open and close at designated times <strong><sup>[<a title=\"Hey, it's a footnote!\" href=\"#footnote1\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/strong>. Some of them are programmed to open and close at specific times (e.g. open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m.), while others are set to open at 15 minutes before sunrise and others at sunrise, with corresponding sundown settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But we have some fairly significant hills to our east and so the sun doesn&#8217;t actually come into view until some time after the &#8220;official&#8221; sunrise. I can also remember vacations in the Rocky Mountains where that phenomenon was even more extreme. It all led me to wonder how those &#8220;official&#8221; sunrise times are determined, and I set out to understand how it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-twentytwentyone-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/meme_thinkingaboutotherwomen.jpg\" alt=\"Meme: Thinking about other women? No, thinking about atmospheric refraction.\" class=\"wp-image-16576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/meme_thinkingaboutotherwomen.jpg 800w, https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/meme_thinkingaboutotherwomen-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/meme_thinkingaboutotherwomen-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">It&#8217;s not a rhetorical question.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"return2\">Unfortunately, I immediately ran into an insurmountable issue: the answer involves math&#8230;trigonometry, to be more specific, and <a title=\"Warning: Here there be math in its severest form\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spherical_trigonometry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>spherical trigonometry<\/em><\/a>, to be tragically specific. I have no idea what spherical trigonometry is, except that it may or may not involve computing the dimensions of a bowling ball or Charlie Brown&#8217;s head. You can read the above-linked Wikipedia article if you find my explanation a bit lacking in clarity or intelligence. <strong><sup>[<a title=\"Another footnote!\" href=\"#footnote2\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"return3\">Then there&#8217;s another obscure component called an <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Analemma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"More info via Wikipedia\">analemma<\/a><\/em>. Analemma is an astronomical term for a diagram that shows the position of the sun in the sky over a year, as viewed from a fixed position on earth. It takes the shape of a stretched-out figure eight. <strong><sup>[<a title=\"And, yes, yet another footnote!\" href=\"#footnote3\">3<\/a>]<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are other components to the computations, most of which are as easily decipherable as ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs viewed through beer goggles, including (but not limited to):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the Sun&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pveducation.org\/pvcdrom\/properties-of-sunlight\/declination-angle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Details -- MANY details -- via the Photovoltaic Educator\">declination angle<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Equation_of_time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"More info via Wikipedia\">Equation of Time<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solar <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mean_anomaly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"More info via Wikipedia\">Mean Anomaly<\/a>\/Solar <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/True_longitude\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"More info via Wikipedia\">True Longitude<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atmospheric_refraction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"More info via Wikipedia\">Atmospheric Refraction<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solar_radius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"More info via Wikipedia\">Solar Radius<\/a> \u2014 This one merits a bit of explanation. The solar radius helps define the <em>upper limb<\/em> of the sun, which is essentially the edge of the sun that first comes into view at sunrise, and that&#8217;s the exact point that determines sunrise (not when the entire or even middle point of the sun is visible). Now, because of atmospheric refraction, the sun&#8217;s light is &#8220;bent&#8221; a bit so that the upper limb seems to appear about two minutes earlier than the actual appearance. (It also causes the light from the setting sun to last about two minutes longer than the actual sunset, but let&#8217;s not go there, shall we?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-twentytwentyone-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"437\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/meme_atmosphericrefraction.jpg\" alt=\"Meme: Atmospheric refraction winning a footrace against the actual sunrise\" class=\"wp-image-16578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/meme_atmosphericrefraction.jpg 640w, https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/meme_atmosphericrefraction-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I confess to not understanding this meme, but it has the words &#8220;atmospheric refraction&#8221; so it must be relevant.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s still more to the computations, like hour angle, standard zenith angle, elevation of observer, and, of course, the latitude and longitude of the observer&#8217;s location. All of this is commingled into a boiling cauldron of science and math and astronomy and physics, with a smidgen of chalk dust and the charred remains of an old slide rule, and the precise time of your sunrise can be ladled out and ingested as part of a hearty breakfast. And you have my sincerest apologies for that awkward metaphor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If all of this is as deeply mystifying to you as it is to me, the following video may or may not help with your understanding. (For me, it did serve to enhance my lack of understanding; YMMV.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"HOW TO CALCULATE SUNRISE AND SUNSET TIMES FOR A GIVEN LOCATION\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/puGJT0QTdhc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The narrator in this video is based in North Carolina, hence the references to &#8220;RDU,&#8221; the code for Raleigh-Durham International Airport.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"return6\">Regardless of whether or not we understand or care about what goes into sunrise sausage (another sad metaphor), the main takeaway is that for all intention purposes (<em>sic<\/em>), the time of sunrise for any given location on earth assumes that our planet is devoid of varying terrain \u2014 picture it as a massive, slightly tilted and tipsy semi-deflated basketball (ignore for this purpose ChatGPT&#8217;s analogy of earth as a spinning top; you <strong>did<\/strong> read <strong>all<\/strong> the footnotes, didn&#8217;t you?) \u2014 so that the official time of the sun&#8217;s appearance over hills, dales (whatever those are) <strong><sup>[<a title=\"This is the last one, I promise (and also that lamest one)\" href=\"#footnote6\">6<\/a>]<\/sup><\/strong>, mountains, buildings, trees, Mesoamerican pyramids, and French basketball players is unaffected by such visual obstacles. In other words, just because you can&#8217;t see the sun from where you are doesn&#8217;t mean it hasn&#8217;t risen, unless the reason you can&#8217;t see it is because it&#8217;s nighttime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By the way, if any of you are helioligists, astronomers, physicists, horologists, mathematicians, NASA scientists, really smart people like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ken_Jennings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"More info via Wikipedia\">Ken Jennings<\/a>, or, heaven help us, an AI agent, and you spot some errors or misperceptions in this post, please feel free to keep them to yourself, as I&#8217;m pretty much over this topic. Ours are battery-operated&#8230;very old school. But we did upgrade \u2014 at quite an upgraded price, I might add \u2014 to rechargeable batteries. Actually, with each shade requiring 12 AA akaline batteries, the payout for switching was pretty quick. And having said that, I now realize that it was geometry and not trigonometry and I actually know nothing about trigonometry. And the more I think about it, the less I care. [<a href=\"#return2\">Return<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"footnote3\">[3] If the term <em>analemma<\/em> seems familiar to you, you&#8217;re either very smart (and I have no doubt that that is the case), or you&#8217;ve visited the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsbpark.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"Visit the Nature Park's website\">Horseshoe Bay Nature Park<\/a> and noticed \u2014 and perhaps even stood on \u2014 the analemmatic sundial that was installed by Boy Scout troop 284 in Marble Falls, Texas. This sundial uses your own body as the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gnomon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"More info via Wikipedia\">gnomon<\/a><\/em>, which is the hifalutin&#8217; term for the part of the sundial that casts the shadow. Each of the twelve stones lying flat on the ground in the center of the installation is inscribed with the name of a month. Those that are standing upright are numbered consecutively, corresponding to the time of day. In this case, they begin with 6 (6:00 a.m.) and end with 8 (8:00 p.m.). By standing on or next to the stone with the current month, your body (or upraised arm) will cast a shadow that will fall on or near the current time of day. In our location in Texas, and <a title=\"Use this website to check your own location; the default for this link is Horseshoe Bay\" href=\"https:\/\/sunrise-sunset.org\/us\/horseshoe-bay-tx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to this website<\/a>, sunrise is never earlier than around 6:30 a.m., and the latest sunset is around 8:40 p.m. <strong><sup>[<a href=\"#footnote4\" title=\"A footnote in a footnote...David Foster Wallace would be so proud!\">4<\/a>]<\/sup><\/strong> Using this sundial means that you&#8217;re on your own to figure out what time it is when it&#8217;s later than 8:00 p.m. But you&#8217;re not dealing with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/atomic-clocks\/how-do-atomic-clocks-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"The US Government's official atomic clock website\">atomic clock<\/a> here, you know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>There&#8217;s a website called <a href=\"https:\/\/sundials.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sundials.org<\/a> that will tell you more about sundials than you ever really wanted to know. <a href=\"https:\/\/sundials.org\/index.php\/teachers-corner\/sundial-mathematics\/324-analemmatic-sundial-how-it-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The page on analemmatic sundials<\/a> gets especially deep into the weeds; I give it props for employing the phrase <\/em>nihil sub sole novi<em> without bothering to translate it (I&#8217;m sure you won&#8217;t have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=Nihil+sub+sole+novi&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"This link may or may not work with your browser\">google its meaning<\/a>, as I did&#8230;but see how considerate I am, just in case).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[<a href=\"#return3\">Return<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"footnote4\">[4] I would have guessed that the earliest sunrise and the latest sunset would fall on the summer solstice, or the longest day of the year. I would have been wrong, because they don&#8217;t. The summer solstice in Texas <em>generally<\/em> occurs on June 20th or 21st but it can be as late as June 22nd. <strong><sup>[<a title=\"Oh man...yet another nested footnote?\" href=\"#footnote5\">5<\/a>]<\/sup><\/strong> The actual latest sunset in Horseshoe Bay in 2026 occurs on June 30th and 31st, while the earliest sunrise happens on June 11th and 12th. Well, I&#8217;ll tell you&#8230;more or less. In order to simplify the explanation so that even I could understand it, I asked ChatGPT to compose that explanation, and below is an excerpt from the conversation it and I shared. But first, keep this fact in mind for the underlying context: Earth actually takes about&nbsp;365.2422 days&nbsp;to orbit the Sun, while our calendar assumes that it&#8217;s only 365 days, and so we have a &#8220;leap year&#8221; to make up for the difference that eventually becomes significant. Now&#8230;from ChatGPT:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Every June, Earth shows up for its annual appointment with the Sun\u2014the moment when it tilts just right and gives us the longest day of the year. You might expect that appointment to be penciled in neatly on the same date forever. It&#8217;s considered a more poetic term than the bourgeoisie-ish modern English version. If you really want to go down this rabbit trail, we can discuss related terms such as <em>dell<\/em> and <em>vale<\/em>, but I don&#8217;t recommend doing so.
