I\u2019ve seen this species before, and even\u00a0<a title=\"A Neighborhood Nature post featuring fungi\" href=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/2024\/05\/18\/neighborhood-nature-pt-22\/#magpie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">written about it<\/a>\u00a0(along with a number of other local species), but I had forgotten the name and, frankly, was too lazy to look it up on my own blog. So I did what any indolent hack blogger would do: I turned to ChatGPT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, let me state for the record that I&#8217;ve got no problem with writers who use AI, as long as they use it properly and disclose if it&#8217;s used to generate a significant portion of their work. I consider it to be a tool, and just as you wouldn&#8217;t use your grandmother&#8217;s sterling silver soup ladle to dig a grave to hide a body \u2014 please assure me that you wouldn&#8217;t do that \u2014 you wouldn&#8217;t\/shouldn&#8217;t use AI to generate an entire blog post (do as I say, <a href=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/2024\/11\/08\/happy-22nd-blogiversary-to-the-fire-ant-gazette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"OK, there was that ONE time I let AI do all the work...\">not as I do<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"return1\">So, with that in mind, please understand that I think using ChatGPT to identify a mushroom is an appropriate use (fungi are notoriously difficult to identify, especially when you don&#8217;t know anything about fungi), and that&#8217;s exactly what I did. It quickly ID&#8217;d the lovely trio in the photo as a group of <a title=\"More info via Wikipedia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coprinopsis_picacea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">magpie inkcaps<\/a> (<em>Coprinopsis picacea<\/em> <strong><sup>[<a href=\"#footnote1\" title=\"Etymology, anyone?\">1<\/a>]<\/sup><\/strong>) which, unlike some of the snakes in Texas, are poisonous but not venomous <strong><sup>[<a href=\"#footnote2\" title=\"Poisonous vs venomous: do I really care?\">2<\/a>]<\/sup><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I did some cross-checking to confirm the validity of ChatGPT&#8217;s assessment, and I could have left well enough alone, but the temptation to do a little bantering with my semi-sentient synthetic sycophant was irresistible. This is what ensued (ChatGPT&#8217;s part of the conversation is shown in red as in &#8220;red flag&#8230;AI-generated content&#8221;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ChatGPT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"return2\" style=\"color: red;\">A couple of important cautions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"color: red;\">\n<li>Do not eat them based on image identification alone.<sup><strong>[<a href=\"#footnote3\" title=\"This is kinda important\">3<\/a>]<\/strong><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Some inkcaps can cause unpleasant reactions when combined with alcohol.<\/li>\n<li>Lawn mushrooms can also absorb chemicals from treated grass.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color: red;\">But from a photography standpoint? Fantastic find. The trio composition and the black \u201cmelting\u201d margins make this look almost staged \u2014 very dramatic little fungi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Me:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I agree\u2026the staging is spectacular. But you know me. Here&#8217;s where my mind went when I saw and photographed it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Child: Where do baby mushrooms come from?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Parent: Well, a mommy mushroom meets a daddy mushroom and they fall in love\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[Please don&#8217;t hold that against me. \ud83e\udd23]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ChatGPT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color: red;\">I refuse to hold that against you because that is exactly the kind of thing those mushrooms look like. \ud83e\udd23<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color: red;\">Honestly, the \u201cproud mushroom parents with the shy little mushroom child standing in front for the family portrait\u201d interpretation is almost impossible to avoid once you see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color: red;\">And the timing is perfect because the adults are at that dramatic \u201cwe are literally dissolving into black goo\u201d stage while the youngster is still trying to look respectable for school pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"color: red;\">It has big <em>&#8220;Now Timmy, someday your cap will deliquesce too.&#8221;<\/em> energy. \ud83c\udf44<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Me:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your use of &#8220;deliquesce&#8221; is, well, delicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ChatGPT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color: red;\">It\u2019s one of those gloriously overqualified scientific words that sounds like it ought to describe either:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color: red;\">A mushroom turning into black ink, or<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color: red;\">A Victorian aristocrat fainting onto a chaise lounge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color: red;\"><em>Lady Penelope deliquesced upon hearing the news. <\/em>\ud83d\ude04<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color: red;\">But in the fungal world it\u2019s wonderfully literal \u2014 the mushroom is essentially autodigesting into a spore-bearing sludge. Nature looked at mushrooms and apparently decided, \u201c<em>You know what would be efficient? If reproduction involved melting.<\/em>\u201d \ud83c\udf44<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"108\" height=\"15\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/divider.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14536\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you can see, while AI is, indeed, a useful tool for tracking down sometimes elusive information, it can also collaborate on an entertaining exchange. And it&#8217;s scarily easy to slip into the mode of treating that exchange as happening between you and an actual personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"108\" height=\"15\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/divider.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14536\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fungal Footnotes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"footnote1\">[1] I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;re asking yourself how in the world they came up with the scientific name \u2014 <em>Coprinopsis picacea<\/em> \u2014 for this mushroom, and that&#8217;s an excellent question that I will try to answer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, the Latin word for <em>magpie<\/em> is <em>pica<\/em> and when that&#8217;s combined with the Latin suffix, <em>-cea<\/em>, meaning <em>resembling<\/em>, you get <em>a thing that resembles a magpie<\/em>, more or less, and that gives us the species name. But the more relevant question is why anyone saw this mushroom and immediately thought <em>Gee, that really looks like a magpie<\/em>. I mean, look at this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"258\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/magpievsinkcap.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/magpievsinkcap.jpg 640w, https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/magpievsinkcap-300x121.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Someone had a heck of an imagination<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The genus name \u2014 <em>Coprinopsis<\/em> \u2014 has a Greek etymology, and it basically means <em>looking like something that lives on manure<\/em>. I shall resist the temptation to create a corresponding visual. [<a href=\"#return1\">Return<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"footnote2\">[2] We&#8217;ve been over this a million times, but I guess once more won&#8217;t hurt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">If you bite it and you die, it&#8217;s <em>poisonous<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">If it bites you and you die, it&#8217;s <em>venomous<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s overly dramatic, but you get the picture, right? [<a href=\"#return1\">Return<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"footnote3\">[3] What ChatGPT is telling us in its own self-effacing way is something like this: &#8220;Don&#8217;t trust me with your life.&#8221; That&#8217;s pretty good advice, right?
