{"id":813,"date":"2012-06-07T20:15:23","date_gmt":"2012-06-08T01:15:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/gazette\/2012\/06\/07\/120607-westtexasfromabove\/"},"modified":"2022-04-06T11:41:24","modified_gmt":"2022-04-06T16:41:24","slug":"120607-westtexasfromabove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/2012\/06\/07\/120607-westtexasfromabove\/","title":{"rendered":"West Texas from Above: Part 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Astoundingly intelligent Gazette readers Gregg Ulvestad, Chuck Rubins, and Paula McKinney correctly identified <a href=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/2012\/06\/06\/120606-westtexasfromabove\/\">aerial photo numero cuatro<\/a> as the world-famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpwd.state.tx.us\/state-parks\/monahans-sandhills\">Monahans Sand Hills State Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I have fond memories of the Sand Hills, despite taking two classes of fifth grade boys over for the day as a part of my Sunday School teaching duties. (Word to the wise: windy days and hot dogs don&#8217;t mix well in that part of the country. I&#8217;m still brushing sand out of my teeth, even though that was 20 years ago.) Not only did I learn to sand surf there, but I recall a great zoological moment when, following a particularly wet spring, someone dug up a 9-inch long salamander who had emerged from a lingering water hole. How long had that critter been dormant beneath the sands, waiting for a wet wake-up call? But I digress. For those who didn&#8217;t recognize the shot, here&#8217;s something to help you get your bearings. (By the way, Chuck and I would like to know the identity of the oil field offsetting the park to the west.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 1px solid #ccc; margin: 0 0 3px 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/images\/miscphotos\/googleearth\/sandhillssp.jpg\" alt=\"Photo\"><\/p>\n<p>OK, I&#8217;ve been pretty easy on you up to this point, but this is where the gloves come off.
