{"id":959,"date":"2013-09-28T09:51:52","date_gmt":"2013-09-28T14:51:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/gazette\/2013\/09\/28\/130928-pomegranate\/"},"modified":"2022-04-02T17:28:14","modified_gmt":"2022-04-02T22:28:14","slug":"130928-pomegranate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/2013\/09\/28\/130928-pomegranate\/","title":{"rendered":"Stalking the wily Punica granatum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re a little late for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rosh_Hashana\">Rosh Hashanah<\/a>, but we harvested the first pomegranate this morning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 1px solid #ccc;\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/images\/miscphotos\/2013pomegranateharvest\/bigone.jpg\" alt=\"Photo\"><\/p>\n<p>We may still be a bit early for optimum ripeness; we never know for sure until we break one apart and try it out, but most conventional wisdom says to wait until October to harvest them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 1px solid #ccc;\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/images\/miscphotos\/2013pomegranateharvest\/slicedopen.jpg\" alt=\"Photo\"><\/p>\n<p>The seed pulp on this one is sweetly tart (or is it tartly sweet? I never can remember), but it wouldn&#8217;t hurt to wait a few days for the rest of the harvest. And we still have plenty to harvest. This is just a portion of what this tree is offering; our second tree also has a few, but it&#8217;s younger and not yet as prolific.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 1px solid #ccc;\" src=\"https:\/\/ericsiegmund.com\/fireant\/images\/miscphotos\/2013pomegranateharvest\/tree.jpg\" alt=\"Photo\"><\/p>\n<p>One thing we seem to forget each year is how many tiny insects hitch a ride inside the crown of the fruit. (Can you spot the one in the above photo of the fruit on the countertop?)
