I don’t have a CD changer in my “office.” It’s just as well, since I don’t listen to music while I work. But it also means that I cannot participate in a favorite blogger activity, that of listing the contents in one’s changer so as to give the world some insight as to one’s musical tastes.
But, being a loyal subscriber to NetFlix, the invention second only to paper towels in terms of all-around utility, I can share with you the top 10 movies that are awaiting shipment for our viewing pleasure. Make of them what you will, but keep in mind that it is actually MLB who keeps our queue up-to-date:
- Mystic River
- Welcome to Mooseport
- Hollywood Homicide*
- The Cooler
- Secondhand Lions
- The Fighting Temptations
- Paycheck
- Love, Actually
- Master and Commander
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The asterisks flag those movies which we saw at the theater during their first run.
I have no explanation for #10 on the list; in fact, you’re learning about it at just about the same time I am. (Note: We have no children in the household, and Abbye has no tolerance for TV.)
I was pleased to see that Bubba Ho Tep is on the queue, albeit down at #19.

I have been looking at signing up for one of these mail DVD services. I could justify the cost for one that also rents PlayStation games. I notice that Netflix doesn’t
What’s your ship time like?
Have to tried any other services?
The top 10 in my queue:
What a Girl Wants
The Station Agent
Veronica Guerin
Calendar
The Missing
Down With Love
Windtalkers
Bottle Rocket
The Royal Tenenbaums
Cold Creek Manor
This list may change as my interest and mood changes, which is often.
Shannon, we haven’t tried anything other than NetFlix, because it’s been absolutely flawless in service. We get an email notice that a movie has been shipped, and it usually arrives two business days later. Couldn’t tell you the lag time between something hitting the top of the queue and actually being shipped, however. We just keep the queue full and something is shipped immediately after we return something else.
This kind of service is ideal for people like us who might get three movies in at once, let them sit for two weeks, and then watch them all in one weekend. We’d have to mortgage our house to pay late fees at Blockbuster!
Jen, I’ll be interested to see what you think about “The Royal Tenenbaums.” I thought it was oddly appealing, but it’s certainly not your run-of-the-mill comedy. Very quirky.
“The Missing” was another quirky movie, but in a whole different strain. Cate Blancett was wonderful.
At first I though “MLB” meant that those conspiracy theories about Major League Baseball were right… and was that the original Chainsaw, or the lame-o remake? I thought everyone from Texas had to see that movie, at the same time you saw The Last Picture Show.
Me and L will have to try Netflix up here on the Third Coast.
lame-o remake, afaik…like I said, I didn’t pick it, and I doubt that I’ll watch it. The original was OK, in a gross campy sort of way, but I couldn’t discern a need for a re-make, nor can I conjure a reason to watch it.
Eric, at the moment, we have 35 in our queue. Here are the top 10, though that is subject to change.
1. Dilbert: The Complete Series, Vol. 1
2. Looney Tunes: Back in Action
3. Poirot: Vol. 3
4. Lost in Translation
5. Under the Tuscan Sun
6. The Fighting Temptations
7. Wasabi
8. The Big Lebowski
9. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
10. Willow
Jeff, Looney Tunes is on our list also, just not in the top 10. I remember seeing you and the family at the theater. I thought it was absolutely hilarious; all the little kids around us kept looking at me strangely as I snarfed Diet Coke out my nostrils every couple of minutes or so.
I thought Lost in Translation was overrated, and parts of it were very uncomfortable to watch. The Big Lebowski had some really funny stuff; also some pretty raunchy stuff. O Brother stays in my top 10 favorites of all-time (well, top 20, anyway). It’s been too long since I’ve seen Willow, but my recollection was that it was a pretty decent fantasy in its day.
Secondhand Lions is very good. You won’t be disappointed with that one.

Eric S. started it:

“Master and Commander” is the only one on your list I’ve seen and I can highly recommend it. You don’t have to be a navy buff to enjoy it.
I can also highly recommend Netflix’ service. A few months ago I lost one of their DVDs. I paid for it and, of course, the very next day I found it. I sent it back to them and they promptly refunded my money.
I realize I’m a few days late in posting to this, but I’ve just recently started reading. :o) I noticed Love, Actually is on your list. I thought it was great! Of course I’m a sucker for sappy movies (my favorite movie is An Affair to Remember) so you might not agree with my opinion, but I thought it was well put together. :o) Amazingly with all the DVDs available to me where I am, I’ve seen very few of what’s on your list. I was actually in another country when I saw Paycheck. I might have to check out Netflix soon, sounds like a good deal.
