A most excellent day…

They say that whatever you do on New Year’s Day, you’ll do throughout the year. They’re wrong, of course, but it’s still a nice thought when the day unfolds as well as this one did. I know you’re dying for the details:

  • Up at the unheard-of time of 8:30 a.m., NYD being the one day of the year we sleep until we can sleep no longer.
  • Leisurely breakfast of scones, cereal with fresh strawberries and blackberries for me, fruit and yogurt parfait for MLB, Rio Grande Valley grapefruit and strong coffee
  • Perusal of the newspaper and online news while watching the Monk marathon on cable
  • Brisk walk with Abbye in cool-but-not-cold weather…she got to chase squirrels up a tree and thus was fulfilled
  • Five mile run with MLB down random neighborhood streets; she kept track of the distance with her Garmin GPS, which just keeps getting cooler. Again, NYD is one of the few times during the year we get to run together, and it’s always fun (in a painful kind of way).
  • Late lunch of honey-glazed ham, traditional blackeyed peas (with jalapeños), yeast rolls and salad…ahhhhhh…
  • A little housework (her – bathrooms; me – dusting [yeah, I know]) just to stay in practice
  • Late afternoon walk with Abbye in shirt-sleeve weather; it’s hard to beat 65° on New Year’s Day
  • Dinner consisting of microwave popcorn, Diet Vanilla Coke (for me) and Fresca (for her), and Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream with chocolate syrup while watching I, Robot on DVD.

I ask you, do we know how to live, or what?
I hope your New Year’s Day was equally stress- (and content-) free!

  1. Eric, that’s a little spooky…our day was just about like yours…69 deg…Honeybaked ham…watching “I Robot” on DVD. Will Smith may be an idiot when he ventures into politics, but he keeps on playing that “Independence Day” role, which he reprises in the robot flick, very well.
Except for the vanilla Coke; we prefer our Diet Coke straight up…
You are right on target, though, with NYD clearly best when it is both stress- and content-free. As ours also was.
May you and your family continue to be blessed in the new year.

  2. It was a good one over here, too.
I was in the middle of the snow/ice storm through Ohio just before Christmas. They never did get the roads cleared enough to run, but then it warmed up enough to melt it all away.
Ran four miles along the river. Actually training now (no longer pretending to train) for the Capital City Half Marathon in April. Had to walk part of it last year – not this time!
Two-year-old slept in, too. Five-year-old played quietly downstairs with Christmas gifts ’til we came down.
    Ah, peace.

  3. Rachel, thanks for humoring an old guy; I’m that it really sounds boring to a youngster like you! 😉
Jack, thanks for the blessing…I pray the same for you and yours, and I look forward to reading LL&POH in 2005.
And, bb, best wishes for your marathon training. It must be nice to have a river to run alongside (although I don’t envy your ice and snow). My wife ran the White Rock Marathon in Dallas a number of years ago, and I know how hard the training is, even for a half. Just don’t increase your mileage too quickly!
